Back Pain After a Car Accident: Causes and Treatment

7 min read

Back pain is one of the most common —and most underestimated— consequences of a car accident. Sometimes it starts right away; other times it shows up days later, just when you thought you’d walked away unharmed. Understanding what causes it is the first step to treating it well.

Why does your back hurt after a crash?

The impact subjects the spine to forces it isn’t built for. In milliseconds, the vertebrae, discs, muscles and ligaments absorb that energy. The most common causes are:

Herniated and bulging discs

The discs that cushion the vertebrae can shift or rupture, pressing on nearby nerves.

Lumbar sprains and strains

Muscles and ligaments stretched beyond their limit. This is the most common cause of post-accident lower back pain.

Sciatica

When a disc or inflammation compresses the sciatic nerve, pain travels down the buttock and leg.

Facet joint injuries

The small joints of the spine become inflamed, causing localized pain and stiffness.

Symptoms you shouldn’t ignore

  • Lower or mid-back pain that doesn’t improve with rest.
  • Stiffness when getting up in the morning or after sitting.
  • Pain radiating into the buttock, leg or foot.
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in the legs.
  • Muscle spasms.

Seek emergency care if you lose bladder or bowel control, or feel severe leg weakness.

How it’s treated (without surgery in most cases)

The vast majority of post-accident back pain improves without surgery. A typical plan includes:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to restore alignment and relieve pressure on the nerves.
  • Physical therapy and exercise to strengthen the core and stabilize the spine.
  • Heat/cold therapy and massage to reduce inflammation and spasm.
  • Diagnostic imaging (X-ray or MRI) when needed to confirm the cause.
  • Pain management and, in specific cases, referral to a specialist.

Why “toughing it out” backfires

Untreated back pain tends to become chronic: tissue heals stiff, muscle weakens and movement patterns change. Treating it early not only relieves it faster, it also prevents pain that could follow you for years.
